Job Market

I am having a very hard time finding a job around here. The biggest problem that I am coming across, is the lack of available IT positions in the Utah area. Perhaps it is just me, but no one seems like they want to hire me. I have been out of work since May 1st. Once I find a position, I would like to be able to stay there for quite a while.

I have been working through Tek Systems a temp agency which does IT Staffing, but to no avail, I was hoping that perhaps I might get on doing IT at America First Credit Union, but the hiring manager there doesn't seem to be returning calls very much. I had an interview there with the HR guy a week ago, I called him back last Friday, and he said that the hiring manager was out of the office all week, and he said something about possibly giving the applications to the assistant manager, the one right below the hiring manager, but I still haven't heard anything on it.

There is a temp position starting on July 2nd but it is only going to last 2 or 3 weeks. I worked doing the same thing the first week of June, the position was supposed to be to replace a bunch of computers at the Citi Group call center in Layton, and it was originally supposed to last 3 weeks to 2 months, at least that is what the career coordination lady at my school said, then when I go to fill out the paperwork at Tek Systems, they tell me it is only going to be the three weeks. Well it was supposed to start on May 14th, but it ended up being postponed 3 weeks because the equipment that I was supposed to install had not yet arrived. I am not sure if it was the fault of the person ordering the equipment, Dell, or the shipping company, but I didn't really like being put off for three weeks. then when I got there, the manager over the project had already done 13 out of the 40 computers as test systems to make sure everything would go smoothly, so I got the project that on my first day there I was told would take 2 weeks, done in 3 days. they had to scrounge around for more work to keep me busy until the end of the week. So there I was once again unemployed.and it was my own fault that time because I worked too fast. The job got done with good quality, but I guess that they didn't expect it to take such a short time. This next position coming up is to replace 130 computers. which will probably take about 2 or 3 weeks. But I am not sure that it will not be postponed just like the last job because of lack of equipment.

Am I the only one having problems like this, or have there been others that have the same problem that I do?

Linux in the IT Industry

Linux, an operating system that has been around for only 15 years, is gaining influence with Information Technology specialists; it is being used in applications that would have previously required UNIX or Windows both of which are licensed and cost quite a bit. While Linux is free and comes with a whole slew of software for just about any project you can think of, and if you can’t find the piece of software you are looking for, just look around, there is a good chance someone has already thought about it and has released a package to do the job.

Aside from being less expensive than Windows and UNIX, Linux can also be easier to manage. Most Linux Distributions come with graphical tools to perform common configuration tasks, these tools make configuring the servers much simpler, but leave out some configuration options. In order to completely configure a server in every detail, you must manually edit the configuration files which have many different options in them and usually are found in the /etc directory.

Some of the tasks which makes Linux perfect for the IT industry, are it’s ability to run multiple servers at one time without requiring a graphical interface to be active, while with Windows, there is always a graphical user interface running taking up the system resources that could otherwise be being put toward that massive database or web server you have running.

So in conclusion, many businesses and a couple of cities have decided to adopt Linux as the primary operating system for their government computers and servers. I would recommend that you too, adopt Linux and experience all the joy and wonder to be found when you have a server that runs well and costs less to maintain and run than if you were running any other operating system.

Technical support advice

Once I was just a crazy kid who thought that the computers at school were just toys to be played with at school and home, I used to find any way I could to get arround security and make the computer do what I wanted despite wether it was made to do it or not, or even if ithe operating system could handle it. Now that I have grown up and matured, I realize that the safeguards that were put on the systems were for a reason, the reason didn't realy apply to me, but to the many people out there who don't know how to manage a computer properly. I admit that in the past I make my fair share of mistakes but that is how I learned what I know, I ended up re-installing my copy of winodws or dos or linux many many times before I learned how not to corrupt it so much that the only way to get it running again was to format the hard drive and restore the system, there are still many things that I do not know, but I think that I know almost everything that is relevent to what I want to do. Not that I intend not to learn anymore, but that I can slow down on my learning. I currently work as technical support for a computer manufacturer, not all people like their techincal support representitaves, but I try to be one of the more likable people out there, I do my best to help the customers who call in and make their experience one of the highlights of thier day, and most of the time I succeed, but sometimes there is just that one customer who wants to be a pain no matter what I do to make him/her happy. If people who called in to techincal support would actually want to be helped, not ask some impossible task like snapping my fingers and having the compter fixed I think that the technical support industry would be the better for it, the techincal support agents would be more happy, and they would provide a better quality sevice, so I would encourage everyone who reads this to try when you call in to techincal support to be positive and try to follow directions as asked and your experience with technical support will be much better.
